The story begins with a tragedy: Audrey Burke (Halle Berry) suddenly loses her loving husband and father of her children. Broken by grief, Audrey turns to her husband's best childhood friend, Jerry Sunborn (Benicio Del Toro). Jerry is a former lawyer whose life has derailed due to drug addiction. Audrey invites Jerry to live in her home, and thus begins an unusual cohabitation, where two broken souls help each other find their way back to the light.
