The masterpiece Sven Tuuva (1958), directed by Edvin Laine, is an epic depiction of the Finnish War (1808–1809) and one of our national writer JL Runeberg's most beloved characters. It is the story of the kind-hearted, slightly slow-witted, but immensely strong and brave Sven, who wants to serve his homeland at any cost.
The film is particularly known for its impressive battle scenes and the defense of the Koljonvirta Bridge, which is one of the most iconic moments in Finnish war cinema. Veikko Sinisalo plays the role of a lifetime as Sven, bringing deep humanity, humor, and tragic heroism to the character.
