Seven Brothers (DVD)
Aleksis Kivi's immortal story comes to life as a SF classic.
Directed by Wilho Ilmari, The Seven Brothers (1939) is the first and, in many people's opinion, most authentic film adaptation of the Finnish national author's masterpiece. It takes us to the depths of Impivaara, where the seven headstrong brothers of Jukola – Juhani, Tuomas, Aapo, Simeoni, Timo, Lauri and Eero – try to avoid the yoke of the law and the norms of society.
The film depicts the brothers' violent growth story from forest dwellers to respectable farmers. Along the way, they experience an escape to Hiidenkivi, a fight with the Toukola boys, a Christmas Eve burnout and, of course, a harsh learning to read. This black-and-white masterpiece captures the rhythm of Kivi's language and the soul landscape of a Finnish man in a way that has retained its power for over 80 years.
