Directed by Aku Louhimiees, Paha maa is a violent, touching and visually arresting depiction of contemporary Finland. The film is a cleverly constructed weave in which small and innocent actions set off an irreversible chain of events. It all begins with a counterfeit five-hundred-euro note that passes from hand to hand, changing the course of the lives of everyone it meets – often with fatal consequences.
The film is loosely based on Leo Tolstoy's story Counterfeit Coupons , but Louhimies has masterfully transferred the story to the cold streets and suburbs of Helsinki.
