Based on Graham Greene's best-selling novel, The Comedians is set in Haiti under the rule of dictator "Papa Doc" Duvalier. It is a harrowing drama where politics, passion and danger intertwine in a tropical setting.
Richard Burton plays Brown, a cynical hotelier who returns to Haiti and finds himself caught up in a climate of fear and violence. He begins a dangerous relationship with the ambassador's wife, Martha ( Elizabeth Taylor ). Along the way, they cross paths with the mysterious "Major" Jones ( Alec Guinness ) and a philanthropic couple ( Peter Ustinov ). All are "actors" - people who play roles to survive in the midst of political terror.
