General Maximus ( Russell Crowe ) is the undefeated leader of the Roman legions and a favorite of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. When the emperor's jealous son Commodus ( Joaquin Phoenix ) murders his father and ascends to the throne, he orders Maximus and his family executed. Maximus escapes, but ends up as a slave and a gladiator. The arena is now his battlefield, and revenge is his only goal as he journeys to the Colosseum in Rome.
