Uncle's Lessons (DVD)

"When a city boy meets the peculiarities of the countryside – Matti Ijäs' quirky and heartwarming coming-of-age story."

Prepare to see the Finnish countryside and family relationships in a whole new light. Matti Ijäs' directed Uncle's Lessons (2011) is part of Yle's popular Kotikatsomo series. It is a story about a young boy, a summer holiday, and an uncle whose lessons are certainly not found in the primary school curriculum.

The film follows young Alfred (Alfred Andersson), who is reluctantly sent to the countryside to stay with his uncle. The uncle, played by Finland's favorite comedian Aku Hirviniemi, is anything but a typical adult. He is eccentric, childlike, and lives in his own world where rules are made to be broken. During the summer, Alfred witnesses his uncle's tragicomic escapades, but at the same time realizes he is learning more about life than ever before.
