Concrete Night – A visual masterpiece of dreams and reality
Experience one of the most acclaimed Finnish films of the 2000s.
Directed by Pirjo Honkasalo and based on the novel by Pirkko Saisio, Concrete Night is a violent, sensitive and visually dazzling depiction of a single day in the concrete jungle of eastern Helsinki. The film is a black-and-white poem that delves deep into the mind of a young boy and a world where hope lies beneath the stone.
The main character is 14-year-old Simo ( Johannes Brotherus ), who is searching for his direction in life. His older brother Ilkka is about to serve a prison sentence, and they spend their last free day wandering the streets of Helsinki. Simo is susceptible to his brother's influences, but the world around him and its expectations drive the boy towards an inexorable and dramatic end.
