When disciplined American businessman Wendell Armbruster Jr. ( Jack Lemmon ) travels to the Italian island of Ischia to retrieve the body of his father, who died in a car accident, he expects a quick and efficient delivery. However, upon arrival, he finds everything he least expects: Italian magnanimity, endless bureaucracy, and a surprising revelation about his father's secret life.
Wendell discovers that his father has spent a month on the island every year for ten years with the same woman. When he meets the woman's daughter, Pamela ( Juliet Mills ), a journey of adversity begins, where American efficiency gives way to an Italian attitude and a budding romance.
