The story is set in 1882 in the New Mexico Territory. Lawmen Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) arrive in the town of Appaloosa to restore order after the ruthless cattle baron Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) has taken control of the area. The situation becomes even more complicated with the arrival of the mysterious widow Allison French (Renée Zellweger).
